On July 3, 2011, the Anonymous group released over 52,000 accounts from pepper.nl, a dating website based in Netherlands. While such release is outside the norm of the group, it was published anyway to show the state of web insecurity many users are facing today. In this case, all passwords stored in the database were hashed using MD5 without salt making it trivial for anyone to use tool such as JtR, described here, to quickly translate them to cleartext passwords. The Anonymous group announced the release in a Twitter post at https://twitter.com/#!/AnonymousIRC/status/87398030780801025.
